For example, if your soil is mostly clay, you’ve probably noticed it holds water like a sponge (and dries into a brick in summer!). Conversely, sandy soil drains too quickly, leaving plants thirsty. So, finding a balance between these extremes is critical.

I have a project on the south shore of Long Island, New York, where the client’s yard was essentially a giant sandpit. There was a thin layer of topsoil in a few areas where it was trapped, but it felt like gardening on the beach. If you still need to compost, now’s the time to start. I’ve had clients who were initially hesitant—”Isn’t composting smelly and messy?”—but were hooked once they saw the results. Besides, you’re doing something wrong if your compost pile is smelly.

Start by collecting kitchen scraps like vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells, then layer them with grass clippings and leaves. You also want course material like tree branches, wood chips, brush, etc. The course material will keep the pile aerated so it doesn’t become foul-smelling. The key is putting less wet material in the pile than dryer material. Keep turning the pile every week or two; nutrient-rich compost will be ready in a few months.

Mulching: Blanket for Your Soil

Mulch is like a cozy, insulating blanket for your soil. It helps retain moisture, prevent weeds, and break down to add more organic matter. The best part? It’s easy. Spread 2-3 inches of organic mulch—wood chips, shredded leaves, or even straw—on bare soil around your plants. Just be sure not to allow any mulch to rest against the main stem of the plants.

Mulch maintains soil temperature and moisture but also cuts weeding in half. If you’re short on time, mulch is a game-changer.

Worm castings are like the luxury version of compost, nature’s black gold. These tiny, nutrient-rich nuggets are created by—you guessed it—worms. When worms eat organic matter, they break it down into highly concentrated, plant-available nutrients. Think of worm castings as a natural, slow-release fertilizer that improves soil nutrient content and structure.

The Benefits of Worm Castings

Worm castings have essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but they are unique in how they release these nutrients. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, which can “shock” your plants with a quick release, worm castings slowly degrade over time, providing an ongoing supply of nourishment.

Additionally, worm castings have beneficial microbes that help improve soil structure, aeration, and water retention. This benefit is advantageous in heavy clay or sandy soils that drain too fast. Worm castings are pH-neutral, which won’t destroy your soil’s natural balance.

  • For worm tea: Steep a handful of worm castings in water for a day or two, then strain and use the liquid to water your plants. It’s like a nutrient-packed smoothie for your soil!

Be sure to do just what is necessary with the worm castings. They can make soil hold too much water, and you may have root rot.

COVER CROPS AND GREEN MANURES

What Are Cover Crops?

Cover crops might sound like something only farmers use, but they’re incredibly beneficial for homeowners. You plant these crops not to harvest but to improve your soil. They prevent erosion, boost nutrients, and even suppress weeds.

Types of Cover Crops

Some popular cover crops for home landscapes include clover, rye, and legumes like peas and beans. Legumes, in particular, are rockstars because they fix nitrogen from the air and put it right into the soil. That’s free fertilizer!

Instead of leaving recently cleared land bare and exposed, rough grade it and seed it with a cover crop like winter rye to overwinter a project in the fall. Then, you won’t have erosion and a muddy mess to work with in the spring.

Planting and Incorporating Green Manures

Once your cover crops have done their job, you can incorporate them into the soil—this is what’s called “green manure.” It’s as simple as chopping them down and digging them back into the earth, where they decompose and feed your soil. Be sure to allow enough time for complete decomposition.

One of the best ways to promote this microbial life is to reduce soil disturbance. Every time you till or dig, you’re disrupting this delicate ecosystem. No-till gardening, where you disturb the soil as little as possible, helps microbes thrive. This practice is still a controversial gardening method, but it’s becoming more popular.

I learned that when preparing soil, only go over an area once with a tiller when composting the soil to avoid changing the soil structure. I’m no soil scientist, but I know over-tilted soil can end up too fine and form a crust on the surface after getting wet and drying out. That crust can increase stormwater runoff, reducing what the ground absorbs.

Another option is adding biofertilizers and microbial inoculants. These are like probiotics for your soil, giving beneficial microbes a boost. You can find them at most garden centers; they’re easy to apply. As more research is released, I am learning more about these biofertilizers and microbial inoculants.

The best way to water your landscape is slowly and deeply, giving the roots time to absorb the moisture without waterlogging the soil. Drip irrigation systems are ideal because they deliver water directly to the plant root without wasting any. You typically don’t know if you have a bad or clogged emitter until the plant is dead or close to death.

Rain gardens can also help. These shallow, landscaped areas collect rainwater, allowing it to seep into the ground slowly. They manage stormwater, help recharge groundwater, and improve soil moisture.

EROSION CONTROL AND SOIL CONSERVATION

Understanding Soil Erosion

Erosion is a silent thief, slowly washing away your topsoil and leaving you with poor, rocky subsoil. This condition is especially common on sloped properties, where heavy rain can carry off soil quickly. Wind can also move soil slowly over time in droughty conditions.

Once you have your results, you can decide what amendments to add. Whether it’s lime for acidic soil or organic fertilizers for nutrient-poor areas, your soil test will take the guesswork out of soil improvement.
